Assembly Biosciences reported that it has licensed its helicase-primase inhibitor program for recurrent genital herpes, including ABI‑5366 and ABI‑1179, to Gilead Sciences, following positive interim Phase 1b data.
Why this is significant
Phase 2 and Phase 3 trials involve hundreds or thousands of participants and cost far more than early studies. Gilead has decades of experience bringing antivirals for HIV and hepatitis to market, which makes it a strong partner to carry a herpes drug through late-stage trials.
What comes next
Gilead was expected to deliver a development plan and budget by mid-2026. Assembly then decides whether to share 40% of US costs and profits rather than take milestone payments and royalties.
Licensing deals are a vote of confidence, not a result. The drugs still need to prove themselves in larger trials.
