A simpler, safer gene therapy for herpes

Em resumoFewer ingredients, fewer side effects, same power: an important step toward a gene therapy that is safe and practical enough to test in people.

In a study published in Nature Communications, Fred Hutch researchers reported that an experimental gene therapy removed 90% or more of HSV‑1 infection in mice and reduced how much virus the animals shed.

How it works

The therapy delivers a meganuclease, a gene-editing enzyme that cuts the herpes virus’s DNA in two places. The damage is too much for the virus to repair. Because shedding also dropped, the approach could reduce transmission, a major concern for many people living with herpes.

What changed from earlier versions

  • The treatment was simplified to fewer ingredients, making it easier to manufacture.
  • It caused fewer side effects in the liver and nerves.
  • The team is adapting the same technology to target HSV‑2.

What it means

Safety and manufacturability are what stand between a lab result and a clinical trial. The researchers said they were working with partners and federal regulators as they prepare for trials in people.
