باختصارA therapeutic vaccine aims to help people who already have HSV‑2 keep it in check without a daily pill. This early trial mainly tests safety and dosing.

Moderna has posted results for its Phase 1/2 study of mRNA‑1608 on ClinicalTrials.gov. It is the first serious attempt to use mRNA technology, best known from COVID‑19 vaccines, to treat genital herpes.

How the trial worked

  • Adults aged 18–55 with recurrent genital herpes: 3 to 9 outbreaks in the year before joining.
  • Participants were randomly assigned to one of three vaccine doses or a control vaccine (a licensed meningitis B shot).
  • Two injections, two months apart.
  • Goals: safety, immune response, and an early signal of clinical benefit.

Why a therapeutic vaccine?

Daily antivirals reduce outbreaks and transmission, but many people find them a burden and they don’t stop all shedding. A vaccine that trains the immune system to keep HSV suppressed could offer protection from a few shots instead of a daily pill.

What to watch

Phase 1/2 trials are small and can’t prove a vaccine works. The signal to watch is whether Moderna moves mRNA‑1608 into a larger efficacy trial. We’ll report when it does.
