After infection, HSV goes quiet inside clusters of nerve cells called ganglia, then periodically wakes up. Every research strategy is an answer to that one problem.
Aim: cure
Gene-editing enzymes are delivered to the nerve cells where HSV sleeps and cut its DNA so it can’t repair itself. In animals this has removed most of the hidden virus. It is the only approach aimed at eliminating HSV, and it is still preclinical.
Aim: near-total control
New drug classes such as helicase-primase inhibitors block a different step of viral copying than acyclovir. Long-acting versions could mean a weekly or monthly pill, with far less shedding and fewer outbreaks.
Aim: prevent and suppress
Preventive vaccines try to stop infection in the first place. Therapeutic vaccines try to help people who already have HSV keep it suppressed. mRNA has given this field a second wind after earlier failures.

No. As of October 2026 there is no approved treatment that removes HSV from the body. Current antivirals like valacyclovir reduce outbreaks and transmission but don’t touch the virus hiding in nerve cells.
Honestly, not soon. The leading cure approach, gene editing, is still preparing for its first human trial. If it works, approval would likely take many years after that. Better suppressive drugs could arrive much sooner.
